Course programme 2012

Designing experimental and field experimental research

Time and place:  20.3.-21.3.12, University of Turku (Faculty of Education)

Tuesday 20.3.2012 EDU2
Wednesday 21.3.2012 Pub 431 and Educarium Data Class 454

Organizers: Doctoral programme for multidisciplinary research on learning environments (OPMON) and the Doctoral programme for Psychology (DOPSY)

Description:

An important goal of educational and psychological research is to determine the causal effects of intervention programs, and practices on different types of outcomes. There are, however, multiple factors that should prevent researchers from making such causal inferences. It is problematic that these threats to validity go often unaddressed in both fields, leading potentially to false conclusions about effectiveness. While there is agreement that randomized experiments provide an invaluable tool for making causal inferences, it is often impossible or impractical to run them. Quasiexperimental designs represent an alternative approach. This course addresses validity and threats to validity in experimental and quasiexperimental research, in particular. The emphasis is on how threats to validity can be dealt with in research designs, for instance by as improving the random assignment process and by missing data analysis. Class sessions will focus on general discussion of the methods as well examples of how the methods have been used.
