8 PhD-student positions and external PhD-student positions

The Academy of Finland has established 8 PhD-student positions at the Doctoral Programme for Interdisciplinary Research on Learning Environments (OPMON) for the years 2010-2013.

In addition to these internal position, the Doctoral Programme grants external PhD-student positions. External students must have funding from external sources but they have permission to participate in the courses offered by OPMON. 

CALL FOR APPLICATION IS CLOSED (October 1, 2009). ALL APPLICANTS WILL RECEIVE AN EMAIL MESSAGE CONFIRMING THE ARRIVAL OF APPLICATION.

Selection procedure

The Board of the OPMON selects the students and decide the lenght of the funding period (maximum of 48 months). The selection of the students is based on the documents submitted by the applicant and the evaluation given by the supervisor (a letter of recommendation). Applicants of the OPMON full time positions may not hold positions in other doctoral programmes or graduate schools. 

Requirements

  • Master's degree or equivalent
  • Language skills: fluent English (written and speech)
  • A clear interest in and proven qualifications for doing research
  • Before submitting an application, a PhD student candidate should contact to a supervisor or a professor to apply a postgraduate student position in one of those Finnish universities part of the Doctoral Programme (see Handbook).

Salary

The salary is approximately 1800€ per month. It may be possible to earn extra for teaching etc.

Applications

Candidates apply by submitting following documents

  • The online application form
  • Curriculum vitae including the list of publications
  • Research plan (maximum of 6 pages, in English)
  • A letter of recommendation (from supervisor)
  • Translated and certified copies of degree certificates (no translation is needed if the origins are in Finnish, Swedish or English) are requested only if a PhD-student position is granted.

In the applications, the instructions for a research plan, curriculum vitae and list of publications given by Academy of Finland should be applied.  Please notice, that in the Academy's instructions, the lenght of the research plan is 12 pages, but in the applications, a research plan should not exceed 6 pages.

The application form includes links to submit a research plan and curriculum vitae by email to Tarja-Riitta Hurme (trhurme@utu.fi). It is possible to pause filling in the application form by pushing the "Break" -button. After that, you will receive an user account and password  to your email address in order to submit a completed application form later on.
